Korean Movies 2011 - What Caught My Eye (Part 1)

Saw a trailer that just made my Mediterranean arm hair stand up so it got me thinking, there are some movies I'm really looking forward to seeing in 2011. Or at least I think they are within 2011...

And having seen some very unsuccessful trailers for korean movies, I appreciate the good ones. Honestly, some of them last over a minute and they even reveal key plot parts or even the damn ending. And the movies are awesome, which you would not believe by watching the trailers for them.

But, thankfully, there are good ones too. More and more of them. So, without further ado, here's some info, posters and trailers on the movies I'm looking forward to.

You can also find Part 2 and Part 3 here.

Let's start with the one I mentioned earlier. The one with the nice trailer.

What I Like

Well, the first thing that drew my attention was Ryu Deok Hwan's face on the poster. I am a fan, yes. Not all the actors I admire are manly perfection personified, neither are all the ones I find handsome good actors. I find Deok Hwan very charming and the kid is just a wonderful actor. I like his choices, like watching his works and watching him work.

Then I looked at the plot. Sounds veeery interesting indeed. What a curse to have. Being able to see people's minds. Even the nicest of us have our own angers, hates, our primal instincts and a basic sickness. It's the raw human mind. If they play this card well, and don't just go for a shallow thriller, this could be an awesome movie. The trailer is looking wonderful, I LOVE the music used for it, love the feeling it gives me. It looks like a big emotional mess. A cauldron full of suspicion, attraction, conflict and darkness, about to break into a thousand pieces. I hope the movie itself feels that way and keeps me at the edge of my seat just as the trailer does.

What I Like

Ha Neul. I like the woman. I like her movies. Like her comedy. So I'm willing to give her more serious works a shot. I will even watch "You're My Luxury Cat", I mean, "You're my Pet" for her. I also like Yoo Seung Ho. Handsome kid. Want to see what his acting is like. And in a few years, I'll be able to say I like him without feeling like a pedophile too. He's friggin' 18...

But most of all, like the plot. It's been done before, sure, but so have many things that still rock. Also, pretty boys who help beautiful damsels in distress usually die in thrillers, but what will happen to a young dongsaeng? He's not a potential love interest so could he actually live? He better...

What I Like

Well, "Planned to have a production cost of 8 billion won" and the big THREEEE DEEEE (3D) letters everywhere must mean this is a big budget action movie... Probably... Yes, I like those too. Although I find 3D completely useless, uninteresting and only good for a sharp headache. I didn't quite take to Host, the previous movie of this sea monster-obsessed director, but I want to watch it again. It's been a long time.

Maybe I'll like this one and maybe I'll like Host too. I mean, look at the cast. Preeeetty good, right? Frankly, I can just stare at Ha Ji Won and Ahn Seong Ki being badass all day and not get bored. And the rest of them are quite a treat too. Fancy CG monster, promise of mayhem, death, coolness, some fanboy service with a tough sweaty chick and some comfort for us ladies with Mr.Drill a.k.a Oh Ji Ho (come on, I know you thought about it). Plus, Ahn Seong Ki being badass. Yep. I'm gonna like this one.

What I Like

Romantic movie about a woman who sees ghosts and her hot (I need a) hero. Son Ye Jin. Lee Min Ki. Need I say more? It has "melodrama" on the title there, so it might just be a big sob story, but I'll check it out. I like Ye Jin a lot since "Personal Taste" and Min Ki... Damn it, Korea... Do they have a Hot Guy Inc. factory over there, making beautiful men or something? Is it the water? It's their water, isn't it?

Title

Moby Dick / 모비딕 (Mo-bi-dik) - Action

Cast

Hwang Jung Min Jin Goo Kim Min Hee Kim Sang Ho

Plot

The title of this film may bring to mind Herman Melville’s classic novel, but “Moby Dick” is actually a chilling voyage through Korean history with enough conspiracy theories to make even the most nationalistic viewer question their government. When a mysterious explosion destroys the fictional Balam Bridge on the outskirts of Seoul, veteran journalist Lee Bang-woo (Hwang Jeong-min) picks up the story and runs with it. Around the same time, he gets a visit from his old friend Yoon-hyuk (Jin Goo), who offers some highly classified information on the case - that the explosion was no accident and that the government caused it.

Thinking the case is no ordinary job, Lee calls on his fellow reporters Sohn Jin-ki (Kim Sang-ho) and Seong Hyo-kwan (Kim Min-hee) to investigate. But when their investigation uncovers conspiracy after conspiracy, the group begins to question the government and they begin to get threats that could endanger their investigation and their lives. With a highly esteemed cast of prestigious Korea actors, including Hwang, who is famous for his role in the 2009 film “Private Eye,” this movie is bound to raise some eyebrows and could be the harbinger of Korean films to come.

What I Like

Well, for one thing, it's friggin' Hwang Jung Min right there. We're talking one of the top actors in Korea. The big talents. How can I see his name and not look into it? Especially after I've seen what the guy can do. Look into this actor, seriously. Also, Kim-ahjusshi! Kim Sang Ho. He's so likable. Like a big teddy bear. I just feel happy every time I see the guy. He's one of those people that give off a vibe that just makes you go "Awww" and feel perfectly serene and cheerful. He's a plus for this. Good actor.

The plot has all the goodies I like. Conspiracies, mystery people chasing the ones trying to discover the truth, car chases and action that have more to them than what Hollywood usually adds as a "story" just to have something to place the action on. I'm so looking forward to this. Looks awesome. This is Part 1 of Korean Movies 2011. Part 2 will be about movies that are about to come out and I desperately need subs for. Watched one of them without subs (couldn't help myself) and loved it.
